I’m Daniel Shin, a senior at Seoul International School. I’m passionate about Native American history and art. With more than four years of experience in historical research, I have had the privilege to have my work featured in the Library of Congress and at National History Day.

My CV can be found linked on the top right corner.

My journey has taken me to explore some amazing places and to meet even more amazing people. I’ve chatted over Zoom with the Chief of the Cherokee Nation Chuck Hoskin Jr. in 2023, worked shoulder-to-shoulder with reference librarians at the Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C., and flipped through centuries-old documents like the Cherokee Phoenix at the Library of Congress.

A 2,500-word research paper on the Treaty of New Echota, the legal document that initiated the forced removal of the Cherokee people in 1838.

A 15,000-word research paper on Cherokee Removal. Under review for publishing eligibility (Concord Review).

The Cherokee removal culminating in the Trail of Tears represents one of the most dramatic Native American dispossessions of the nineteenth century. The events that led to the signing of the Treaty of New Echota to the eventual forced removal in 1838 resulted from the different intertwining forces at work, both planned and unplanned. It is a complex story of competing human interests, filled with politicking, maneuvering, and chance. Nothing about this chapter in American history was natural, simple, or inevitable. At the center of this political and social maelstrom were two equally headstrong men, President Andrew Jackson and Cherokee Principal Chief John Ross.

A 2,500-word research paper on the Navajo Code Talkers, a group of Navajo people who played a significant role in America’s success in the Pacific theater during WWII.

Last summer, I interned at the Library of Congress. There, I created the Library’s first Native American exhibition box for The Source, a soon-to-open permanent exhibition space for youth patrons.
